Editorials that defend the status quo are such a waste of time. Especially when they are so illogical and hand-wavy.
First: If all of the excess spending were related to one-time stimulus, then it would be fine to say we won’t cut that right now, but we will cut it later. That would help to limit the impact on the province’s credit rating, too. But the deficit isn’t just caused by one-time spending or revenue shortfalls, and that’s the real problem. So the CCPA’s point isn’t really relevant to this article’s argument.
Second: This doesn’t address any of the consequences of running ridiculous deficits. It’s not a question of “sell the LCBO and save some money” or “do nothing with no consequences.” It’s hard to take an argument seriously that utterly fails to address the issue.
